Biography

Rob Nelson writes π€πˆ 𝐋𝐨𝐠, an online newsletter/blog about his teaching and talks with people about the educational value of generative AI, how these technologies are changing education, and what we should do about it.

For 18 years, he worked in Penn’s Office of the Provost overseeing campus-wide implementations of academic technology and directing institutional initiatives related to accreditation, new student orientation, student wellness, and undergraduate research. He has served on the Middle States Evaluation Team for accreditation reviews of Carnegie Mellon University and University of Maryland, Baltimore, and will serve on the team for upcoming review of Teachers College, Columbia University.

Prior to coming to Penn, Dr. Nelson worked at Rutgers University as an assistant dean for academic advising, taught first-year writing courses, served as a visiting assistant professor of American Studies, directed a program for Japanese students studying in the U.S., and earned an M.Ed. in Educational Theory and a Ph.D. in American History.

Dr. Nelson teaches courses that explore how gender, ideas, markets, slavery, social justice movements, and technology have shaped the development of educational institutions in North America.
