
Eric Hartman will join Penn GSE as director of the Executive Doctorate in Higher Education Management and senior fellow, effective July 7, following a national search. Hartman was most recently at Haverford College, where he has served for the past nine years as executive director of the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship.

Hartman earned his PhD in International Development from the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, while also engaging in cross-cultural development practice across Latin America, Africa, Europe, and the United States. His work reflects a deep and sustained commitment to higher education’s public purposes: from advancing economic mobility to cultivating critical thinkers and producing innovative research that informs practice.
Throughout his career, Hartman has taught at, attended, or worked with nearly every type of higher education institution: community colleges, regional public universities, land-grant institutions, faith-based colleges, liberal arts institutions, and Ivy League schools. He is the co-founder of the Community-based Global Learning Collaborative and has written extensively on civic and global learning, human dignity, ethical community engagement, and education’s role in democracy. His scholarship includes a book and dozens of peer-reviewed articles, along with public commentary in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and other outlets.
