A record number of Indian universities are among those that meet many of the United Nations’s 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). This continues the trend of an increasing number of Indian universities standing out when judged against the SDGs.

Alan Ruby, a Penn GSE senior fellow and director of the Global Engagement Office, spoke to the World Economic Forum about the reasons behind this success. He pointed to the internationalization of India’s higher education system, as well as the broader increase in access to higher education for India’s expanding population.

“New legal frameworks for branch campuses and international programs are positive developments, and with education 'free zones' like GIFT city [in Gujarat], they may attract a greater international presence,” Ruby said. “But the real potential for greater internationalization could be attracting more international faculty and strengthening cross-national partnerships based on Indian research talent.”
