Alan Ruby questions QS's new model for ranking graduate schools

July 15, 2023

QS World University Rankings, one of the big four university ranking schemes, recently revised its formula for the first time in nearly 20 years. The new formula introduces three factors, such as “Employment Outcomes,” while downgrading important existing categories.

In a new column for University World News, Senior Fellow Alan Ruby writes that the new measure “is perpetuating a notion that the quality of a university education can be discerned by looking primarily at the male alumni.”

He said the narrowly-focused “Employment Outcomes” category ignores people working for the common good and women, for example.
