A major global research initiative led by WISE — Qatar Foundation’s education arm — and the Institute of International Education has been launched to explore how artificial intelligence can transform higher education. Penn GSE is one of seven global universities involved. The project will examine how AI can enhance learning and workforce readiness across diverse regions.
Penn GSE’s contribution centers on assessing the broader social impacts of AI in education, particularly around equity in educational outcomes. Researchers will conduct a comparative study between two institutions — a medallion university and an opportunity institution — to examine how faculty are integrating AI into classrooms. The study will explore faculty perspectives, their assumptions about AI, and how its use affects social mobility and equity in education.
Stavros Yiannouka, CEO of WISE, emphasized that higher education has a pivotal role to play in preparing students for an AI-driven future. Findings from the project will be shared at the WISE Summit in 2025, as the consortium aims to provide actionable insights on how AI can drive both innovation and inclusivity in education systems globally.
