Last week, Penn GSE Dean Pam Grossman hosted the School District of Philadelphia’s new superintendent, Tony B. Watlington, at a welcome reception in the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts on the Penn Campus. Dr. Watlington took over as superintendent of Philadelphia schools earlier this year.

The reception was an opportunity for members of the Penn GSE community to meet Dr. Watlington.

Among the attendees were Dr. Watlington’s leadership team, Penn faculty and researchers, school district board members, and Penn GSE students.

There are strong ties between Penn GSE and the School District of Philadelphia, not only in the number of Penn GSE alumni working across the district but through innovative projects like a STEM summer program and the Responsive Math Teaching Project.

Penn GSE also works closely with district schools across the city, including Penn Alexander and Henry C. Lea, two public elementary schools in West Philadelphia. In April, Dean Grossman and the University of Pennsylvania announced a $4.1 million/5-year commitment to provide broad support for critical initiatives at the Lea school.
