Overview

Our master's program in School Leadership focuses on the dynamics of instructional, organizational, public, and evidence-based leadership—with coursework designed to help you draw connections between theory and practice by applying learning in school settings. We emphasize cross-cutting competencies, including habits of mind, intrapersonal/interpersonal growth, reflective practice, communication skills, and professionalism.

A Cohort with a Wide Array of Experiences

Our cohort model creates a collaborative learning community that leverages collective expertise to address the challenges facing schools. Through lively and intellectually stimulating dialogue, students broaden their perspectives and achieve new insights. Sharing an array of experiences prepares students for the practical realities of assuming new leadership roles, often outside of their present school. Our accomplished faculty further reflects the immense value of varied experiences for professionals pursuing leadership in education.

One-to-one Mentoring

One of the most valuable assets for aspiring school leaders is the opportunity to cultivate strong mentoring relationships—a hallmark of the School Leadership, M.S.Ed. program. Drawing on a wealth of experience in school leadership and administration, University-assigned mentors work closely with students throughout the year, playing a pivotal role in their development as effective and confident leaders.

Unique Partnership with the School District of Philadelphia

The School Leadership, M.S.Ed. Public/Charter School Track Program is pleased to offer a $15,000 scholarships in addition to the $25,000 School District of Philadelphia Pathway to Leadership Scholarship to School Leadership, M.S.Ed. students who are also pursuing their Principal Certification through Penn GSE. Program Highlights

Internship

Students complete an on-site internship within their current workplace, focusing on key leadership areas such as teacher supervision, budgeting, curriculum development, and community relations. With guidance from a selected school-based mentor, students refine their leadership and observation skills. Special arrangements are available for students not currently employed in a school setting.

  • Independent School Track: 240 hours
  • Public/Charter School & Principal Certification-Only Tracks: 360 hours

Portfolio

Throughout the year, students develop a portfolio showcasing their understanding of school leadership and explore a key question or area of interest. The program culminates in an oral presentation demonstrating the knowledge and leadership competencies they’ve gained.

Practitioner Research Project

Students design and carry out a research project within their own school, applying data analysis and inquiry methods. A completed project is required for graduation.

Focused Observations

Students participate in daylong visits to a variety of independent and public/charter K–12 schools, which take place throughout the program. Using research-based techniques, they observe, analyze, and communicate about school practices to apply their learning to curriculum development and leadership. Attendance at two site visits is required.

Following the August weekend orientation, the cohort meets in person one weekend per month in Philadelphia from September through June, and again for a two-week in-person intensive in July. Students also participate in a monthly virtual evening session from August through June.

Throughout the year, students are required to attend two Focused Observation sessions of their choice. These visits take place at traditional public, charter, and independent schools across the Philadelphia region. To accommodate participants from across the country, observation days are scheduled on Mondays or Fridays, typically adjacent to a weekend session.
