William & Mary provides a testing ground for faculty involvement in college sports

William & Mary, which has a rich history and a strong honor code, decided to drop seven sports in September. In the announcement, the athletic director appeared to have borrowed language from a similar announcement from Stanford – a violation of the school’s honor code.

The faculty have now stepped in, and the Faculty Senate will debate several resolutions aimed at addressing the current situation, including the creation of a new Athletics Task Force that would include faculty representation. Karen Weaver, a Penn GSE expert in college athletics administration, argues that faculty can bring a valuable perspective to campus athletics, including financial acumen, legal analysis, and campus culture.
