Penn GSE Faculty Promotions

February 25, 2011 - The Provost’s Staff Conference has announced two promotions at the Graduate School of Education. Marybeth Gasman has been promoted to the rank of full professor and Susan Yoon to the rank of associate professor.

A historian of education, Dr. Gasman focuses her research on issues pertaining to philanthropy and historically black colleges. After ten years in university and community administration, Dr. Gasman received a Ph.D. in higher education from Indiana University in 2000. She came to Penn GSE in 2003. In 2006, Dr. Gasman was awarded the Association for the Study of Higher Education's Promising Scholar/Early Career Award for her scholarship. In 2008, she received the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education Excellence in Teaching Award. In 2009, Dr. Gasman was selected by the Provost as one of eight Penn Fellows.

Dr. Yoon’s area of expertise is science and technology education, including complex systems and memetic processes in education. She is the principal investigator or co-PI of four National Science Foundation projects: SPARK — Igniting Interest and Achievement in STEM through Engineering DesignNanotechnology and Bioengineering in Philadelphia Public Schools, ARIEL — Augmented Reality for Interpretive and Experiential Learning, and BioGraph: Graphical Programming for Constructing Complex Systems Understanding in Biology. Dr. Yoon received the 2009 Jan Hawkins Award for Early Career Contributions to Humanistic Research and Scholarship in Learning Technologies from Division C of the American Educational Research Association.
