January 14, 2011 - In the wake of the devastating fire that consumed the Windermere Court Apartments at 4800 Walnut on January 10, a number of organizations are collecting clothing and/or funds to help those affected. All 98 residents - including a GSE student and GSE alum - have been left homeless. Anyone interested in supporting our neighbors can give to:
- The SP2 Clothing Collection is accepting new/gently used coats, winter clothing, boots and shoes, sweaters/sweatshirts, gloves/hats/scarves; new underwear or socks; new/gently used large totes; toiletries/toothbrushes. Bring all donations to Caster Lobby, 3701 Locust Walk by January 19, 2011.
- The University City District is accepting clothing, shoes, or personal hygiene items. UCD is located at 3940-42 Chestnut Street; hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- The Salvation Army is also accepting clothing, shoes, or personal hygiene items as well as financial donations at their offices at 5501 Market Street, 215-474-1010
- The Red Cross is accepting online financial donations through their website.
- City Kitties is helping with pets that have been displaced by the fire.
Questions about this effort should be directed to Penn GSE's assistant dean for academic and student affairs, Lois MacNamara.
