Why do university faculties often lack racial diversity? A common explanation is that the pool of minoritized candidates is too small and hard to reach. But according to Damani White-Lewis, the root causes run much deeper than that. An expert on faculty recruitment and retention in Penn GSE’s Higher Education programs, White-Lewis shares 10 tips for achieving a more diverse professoriate.

PEDAL: Practical English for Daily Living

PEDAL: Practical English for Daily Living offers free English as a Second Language classes taught by students in the M.S.Ed. TESOL program. It provides courses for family members of staff, students, professors, scholars, and post-docs at Penn, as well as Community courses for West Philadelphians.

Coalition for Educational Equity

The Coalition for Educational Equity provides innovative resources, research-based training, and technical assistance and consultation to school district leaders throughout the Mid-Atlantic region in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.

PACE (Programs for Awareness in Cultural Education)

PACE (Programs for Awareness in Cultural Awareness) is collaboration between Educational Linguistics/Intercultural Communication and the Greenfield Intercultural Center. It was founded in 1993 by Penn GSE students. Its mission is to train students to increase cross-cultural awareness at the University of Pennsylvania.

Visiting Scholars Speaker Series: Diverse Perspectives in Education

Each year since 2008, a number of scholars from diverse backgrounds and perspectives from all over the country are invited to Penn GSE to give lectures and share their research with faculty and students as part of the Visiting Scholars Speaker Series: Diverse Perspectives in Education. The series also provides an opportunity for doctoral student socialization and learning. These talks are followed up with a lunch and conversation between students and the speaker about their work. 

Committee for Race, Equity, and Inclusion 

The Committee on Race, Equity, and Inclusion has focused its work on addressing school climate, creating a center that brings together students interested in issues of race and equity, and strengthening policies and procedures for dealing with sexual harassment and racial bias.
