Jarvis: Many school districts struggling with demographic changes

In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, the Southern Poverty Law Center documented thousands of incidents of hate speech and racial intimidation, including many in Pennsylvania.

Bob Jarvis, director of Penn GSE’s Leadership for Excellence and Equity Initiatives, recently told Rolling Stone  that the rhetoric of President Donald Trump’s campaign emboldened people who might have stayed quiet in the past.

The effects are spilling into schools, especially in communities that are undergoing significant demographic changes.

"Part of what's going on in this school, and these other districts, are areas that are more diverse and more economically challenged," Jarvis told the magazine. "And they're not prepared for it."
