Professional Biography
Matthew Zealand teaches Spanish and French in the Upper School at the Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland. He was recently named Gilman’s Co-Director of the Independent School Teaching Residency Program after having spent the last several years as the Chair of the Modern Languages Department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coaches JV soccer and baseball at the school and serves as a faculty advisor to the school’s student-run newspaper, the Gilman News. Previously, he was the World Languages Department Chair and Varsity Cross Country and Head Girls Soccer Coach at the Drew School in San Francisco, California, where he also played a leading role in their experiential learning program, heading up student trips to Spain, Peru, Arizona, Texas, and locally in the Bay Area. He earned an M.A. in Spanish Linguistics from the University of California, Davis, after receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish Literature and Psychology from Towson University in Maryland.
