What your day in the Urban Teaching Apprentiship Program looks like changes quite a bit throughout the year but for the second half of your program you will be teaching full day in the classroom. I follow a pretty regular schedule with the only thing differing from day to day is if I have class in the evening. Below is my regular schedule on a day where I will teach full day and then have a class in the evening.
6:00 am- Wake Up
6:10 am- Yoga or Run
- Depending on how exhausted I am and if I snooze my alarm I will either go for a quick run or do some morning yoga. Taking time to take care of myself helps set me up for a successful day at school.
6:30 am- Shower and Get Dressed
6:50 am- put coffee on and make breakfast.
- I try to take this time to read the news or look at twitter but if I feel like I need a chance to review my lessons I may look over certain parts of my lessons or reread the read aloud for the day.
7:15 am- Pack lunch and dinner for the day. Double check to make sure I have everything I need for the day
7:35 am – Leave for school.
- I am lucky enough to live within walking distance of where I teach. It takes 10-15 minutes for me to walk to school.
7:50am- Arrive at school.
- I will take this time to prepare anything I need for the day, making copies, writing anything up on the board, tidying the classroom
8:30 am- Pick up students.
- I will then have my students from 8:30 until 11am
11:00 am- Lunch
- I will take this time to make sure everything is set for the afternoon and then I typically will join the other first and second grade teachers in the break room for lunch.
11:50 am- Pick students up
- I will then have my students until 2:30.
1:30 pm- Meeting with my Classroom Mentor
- This is the time that my classroom mentor and I will meet to discuss lesson planning, what we are doing and how we are going to divide the work.
2:13 pm- Pick students up from special
3:00 pm- Student dismissal
3:15 pm- Work time
- I typically have about 45 minutes to get work done at school before I need to leave for class. This includes any last minute planning with my mentor, copying for tomorrow, classroom tidying.
4:00pm- Leave for class
- At this point myself and the other apprentices at my school will walk to GSE. It takes about 15-20 minutes but it is a simple walk straight down the middle of campus.
4:30 pm-Class
- Evening classes will run from 4:30-7. Dependent on the class it may be a guest lecturer, a methods course, or a discussion-based class.
7:10 pm- Get Home
- At this point I will get home and normally take about half an hour to just relax. Taking time to sit down and just do something fun
From that point on I will possibly spend a bit of time working dependent on what needs to get done. I will journal and due a quick ten-minute meditation. Taking a moment to ground myself and reflect after a busy day helps me see all that I completed and settled before going to sleep. Then my goal is to be in bed by 10:15pm most nights so I can be asleep by 10:30-11
