GSE-TFA Student Miranda Schaeffer Wins July Photo Contest

July 15, 2013 - We are pleased to announce the July winner of the the inaugural Penn GSE Summer Photo Contest: Miranda N. Schaeffer, a student in the Penn GSE-TFA Urban Teacher Program. Schaeffer is pursuing an alternative route to elementary teacher certification, so she's spending the summer accruing observation and teaching hours by volunteering in a pre-k classroom at a school in Southwest Philadelphia.

"A daily activity in the pre-k classroom was dancing contests on the carpet," says Schaeffer. "This photo was taken before nap time, with students doing free style dancing." Schaeffer also pointed out that the school "incorporated both English and Spanish into the the classroom through subtle ways. The carpet has colors and numbers in both Spanish and English for an enriching educational experience."

As the July winner, Schaeffer will receive a Penn GSE t-shirt and a framed print of her photo. Schaeffer's photo will also advance to the final round of the contest, in which each of the three monthly winners will be considered for the top prize: an iPad mini. IEDP student Xinyi Zhou won the June photo contest

Penn GSE students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit photos of their summer activities to the contest. Entries for the month of August are due by midnight on Saturday, August 31. More on submission guidelines and contest rules are below.
