Using data from three studies, this presentation by Professor María Cioè-Peña showcases how educational and demographic labels and classifications such as “English language learner” and “student with disabilities” influence students’ schooling experiences as well as their identity development. Building on the findings, Cioè-Peña proposes recommendations that address students' academic and linguistic needs while also fostering their sense of belonging.
