The Early Childhood Education and Family Studies (ECEFS) Academic Certificate Program and the Penn Early Childhood and Family Research Center (PECF) co-sponsor a speaker series for the 2024–2025 academic year focused on issues of early childhood development and social policy.

The first event of Spring 2025 will feature Dr. David Mandell, Professor and Director, Penn Center for Mental Health; Vice Chair for Faculty Development, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The talk is titled “The Long and Winding Road: Implementation Challenges in Moving from Exclusion to Inclusions in Philadelphia Public Schools.”

The School District of Philadelphia has a long history of using autism support classrooms to educate most autistic students, regardless of their potential to be included with their typically developing peers. This presentation will make the case that greater inclusion would be better for students and teachers, discuss what supports would be needed for this to happen, and provide a brief history of one research team’s partnership with the district to increase school participation among autistic students.
