In this presentation, Dr. Sambolín Morales discusses how using Paolo Freire’s culture circles enabled displaced Puerto Rican mothers to challenge the colonial project by focusing on amor, comunidad, and corrientes de esperanza. Sambolín Morales’ work as a Puerto Rican mother and scholar draws from feminist women of color epistemologies and critical pedagogy in an attempt to contest epistemic injustices. Her research centers on the vulnerability, love, and resistance in the narratives of Puerto Rican women who must navigate the communities and schools in the U.S. that receive them to ensure their family’s survivance and their children’s academic success.
