Seeds for Progress is a nonprofit organization based in Guatemala City, Guatemala, that has created groundbreaking educational initiatives for children of coffee farmers. The “coffee farm schools” provide innovative education that allows students to learn about sustainable farming and related career development pathways. Penn GSE professors Sharon Ravitch and Mike Nakkula have been longtime partners of helping to conceptualize the school models on the coffee farms. Nakkula helped guide the schools from a possibility development perspective by exploring what types of opportunities in life the schools are or will prioritize. The Seeds model has implications for educational reform and career development in contexts that typically do not experience such enrichment opportunities. Seeds Program Coordinator of Education Martha Alicia Moreno will discuss their latest activities and prospects for their ongoing growth.
