Penn Sociology Education & Inequality Cluster Workshop: Dr. Priyadarshani Joshi

The University of Pennsylvania Predoctoral Training Program in Interdisciplinary Research Methods for Field-based Research in Education, sponsored by the Institute for Education Sciences (IES), is excited to promote this event sponsored by our colleagues in the Department of Sociology's Education & Inequality Workshop.

Dr. Priyadarshani Joshi, Senior Research Officer with the Global Education Monitoring Report at UNESCO, presents “The Role of Non-State Actors in Education Globally: Conceptualization, Trends and Evidence” on Friday, February 3, at 12:00pm.

Priyadarshani Joshi joined the GEM team at UNESCO in 2014, and is now based out of New York. In the team, she leads and contributes on two key issues: non-state actors in education and how education contributes to other sustainable development outcomes, such as climate change, gender equality, and inclusive cities. She currently coordinates the South Asia Regional Report on non-state actors, liaising with several regional partners. She also coordinates the GEM Report Fellows program, part of the Report’s cross-cutting agenda to engage with the external academic community.

Her background is in education policy, economics, and public policy – she has a Ph.D. in Education Policy from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master’s in Public Administration (Economic Policy) from Princeton University, and an undergraduate degree in Economics and Chemistry from Amherst College. Her personal research focuses on the system-wide consequences of private school growth for the education system, and her research has been published extensively – in the Comparative Education Review, Compare, International Journal of Educational Development, Prospects, and the European Journal of Education.

She has previously held research positions at the IMF (Research Officer, Western Hemisphere Department) where she coordinated the Regional Economic Outlook and focused on social policy analysis. She has done consultancies at UNICEF (Social Protection Team) and the World Bank (Human Development Network). Priya also initiated, co-designed, and was part of the board of an innovative mobile library project in Nepal, one of the World Bank Development Marketplace 2003 Education Sector Project winners.
