Each year, Penn GSE invites select scholars of color to share their research with faculty and students as part of our Visiting Faculty Scholars of Color series. The series provides an opportunity for doctoral student socialization and learning. These talks are followed by lunch and conversation between students and the speaker.
The Visiting Faculty Scholars of Color series presents Dr. Joy Gaston Gayles, Professor of Higher Education and Program Coordinator in the Department of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development at NC State University. Recipient of the 2018 Zenobia L. Hikes Woman of Color in the Academy Award, she is the newly elected President of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. She also serves as a member of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. Gaston Gayles' research focuses on the experience of college students – particularly student-athletes as well as underrepresented students and women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – and how those experiences impact desired outcomes of undergraduate education.
