Overview

The Race, Diversity, and Equity in Higher Education certificate program offers a virtual, intensive, accelerated, four-month professional learning experience that reflects on the history and policies related to diversity and equity in institutions of higher education; explores the workings of racism and bias and their impact; and examines promising practices to approaching diversity and equity and leading institutional change. Designed and facilitated by Dr. Ann E. Tiao, Ph.D., Penn GSE Assistant Dean for Student Services, and Dr. Jessie Harper, Ed.D., Lecturer, MSW Program, Penn Social Policy & Practice, and former GSE Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs and Diversity, this new and innovative certificate program will engage higher education personnel in an exploration of critical issues, ideas, and best practices related to race, diversity, and equity.

Modeled after a popular graduate course at Penn GSE, this program was created for higher education leaders and administrators. Upon successful completion of the certificate, you’ll be able to:

  • Reflect on the history and policies related to diversity in institutions of higher education.
  • Explore the social construction of race and its relationship to equity and diversity.
  • Explore the origin of the notion of whiteness.
  • Discuss its impact on institutions, policies, and individuals
  • Recognize the multiple and simultaneous connections between different forms of bias based on particular identities (race, gender, religion, and sexual identity) and how these are manifested in institutions of higher education.
  • Explore promising practices to approaching diversity and leading institutional change.
