Dr. Yumi Matsumoto, an assistant professor in the Educational Linguistics Division, will present her Tenure Review Colloquium, titled “Multilingual International Students’ Communicative Practice in U.S. University Classrooms: New research Insights.” All staff, faculty, and students are welcome.

Dr. Yumi Matsumoto is an applied linguist and second language teacher educator. In her research, she examines and illustrates how multilingual international students who speak English as a second language successfully communicate in English with their instructors in U.S. university classrooms. Dr. Matsumoto’s primary objectives in this area of research are illuminating how those multilingual students and their instructors use miscommunication as a space for negotiating understanding; projecting a positive view of multilingual speakers’ interactional competence that possibly contradicts the often-negative perceptions of these students’ communicative skills; and providing the pedagogical implications of this work for (language) teacher education. Dr. Matsumoto’s work focuses on three major areas: (a) enriching multilingual classroom discourse analysis by employing multimodal and ethnographic approaches; (b) understanding multilingual learner agency within classroom interactions; and (c) strengthening English as a lingua franca conceptually.
