The Penn GSE Center for Professional Learning has merged with the Penn Literacy Network to form the Penn Learning Network—a vibrant new hub for professional learning at Penn GSE.

The Penn Learning Network designs and delivers high-quality professional learning experiences that support educators, leaders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and professionals across sectors. We partner with faculty to bring expertise and research into practice through a range of offerings across content areas and professional contexts.

Our offerings include continuing education courses, certificate programs, virtual institutes, webinars, workshops, and instructional coaching designed to help participants deepen their knowledge, expand their networks, and advance their careers.

Children of Poverty: Using PLN Frameworks to Positively Impact Student Engagement

This course centers on Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind by Eric Jensen, offering educators research-based strategies to support student engagement and achievement, particularly for children affected by poverty and trauma. Through collaborative reading and discussion, participants explore practical methods to build a high-energy, supportive classroom environment and enhance cognitive capacity, guided by The Four Lenses of Learning and The Five Reading, Writing, Talking Processes.

Design Thinking Through the Four Lenses: Infusing STEAM, Maker Education, Project based learning, and Inquiry-based learning in the K-12 Classroom

This course introduces educators to Design Thinking as a human-centered approach to problem-solving, connecting its phases with PLN Frameworks, State Standards, and National Standards. Participants explore STEAM, Project-Based, and Inquiry-Based Learning while applying strategies like the I-Search process and Genius Hour to create innovative, real-world classroom projects.

Executive Coaching

The Executive Coaching certificate program aims to empower leaders with the tools and strategies needed to foster positive transformation in others. Led by faculty experts in adult learning, our program provides evidence-based education tailored to help you achieve your coaching goals effectively.

Extending Reading and Writing through Visible Learning

This course offers educators the opportunity to engage with a professional text from John Hattie's Visible Learning series, focused on evidence-based practices across disciplines including literacy, mathematics, science, social-emotional learning, and technology integration. Participants select the volume most relevant to their instructional focus, enabling targeted application of research-driven strategies to enhance student learning across the curriculum.

Forming & Reforming Reading, Writing, and Talking Across the Curriculum

In this course, participants apply the PLN Frameworks to their own classroom materials, adapting strategies to fit their specific curriculum and student needs. Through problem-solving and critical thinking activities, educators explore inclusive teaching methods that support comprehension, composition, language investigation, and student reflection within a workshop-based approach.

Instructional Coaching Endorsement & Certificate Program

The Instructional Coaching Endorsement and Certificate Program equips K–12 educators with the knowledge and practical skills to become effective instructional coaches and change agents while earning a Pennsylvania Instructional Coaching Endorsement. Participants explore coaching models, relationship-building, and feedback strategies while applying their learning through embedded practicum hours in real-world settings.

Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners

This course equips educators with research-based strategies to support diverse learners—including students with autism, ADHD, English Language Learners, and gifted students—across reading, writing, and speaking. Participants build a practical framework to address varied learning needs, while exploring one or more learner groups in depth through instruction, research, and classroom application.

Reaching and Teaching Gen Z

This course examines Generation Z through the lens of technology, mental health, and current social trends, helping educators better understand and empathize with today’s students.

Science Conservation and Literacy Supporting Endangered Species

This course supports educators in enhancing science and literacy instruction through a focus on conservation and endangered species, using case studies and hands-on experiences like zoo visits to connect research-based strategies with real-world application. Participants develop a curriculum unit centered on an animal of their choice, integrating The PLN Frameworks and State Standards, while collaborating to address practical classroom implementation.

Science Education for the Future: Creating Inquiry-Driven Learning Experiences Connecting to NGSS and STEELS

This course provides educators with a comprehensive understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and STEELS, focusing on the implementation of three-dimensional, inquiry-based science instruction. Participants learn to unpack standards, integrate phenomena, and design lessons that incorporate performance expectations, disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts to support diverse learners and promote deeper scientific understanding.

Social-Emotional Teaching & Learning in the Trauma-Informed Classroom

The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Certificate enhances educators' abilities to apply classroom-based lessons and curriculum to develop students’ intrapersonal and interpersonal skills for success in and out of the classroom.

Universal Design for Learning

Acquire the tools you need to embrace learner variability, proactively identify barriers, and unlearn the beliefs, skills, and systems that prevent all students from learning and innovating. In this 2 course certificate in Universal Design for Learning, we'll share the power and promise of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the Innovator’s Mindset and provide learners with options, choices, and opportunities to reflect, create, connect, and innovate. 

Writing for Learning: Building Habit, Stamina, and Fluency

This course focuses on writing across the curriculum by exploring practical, research-based strategies that support student engagement, writing fluency, and content understanding. Participants learn to implement varied writing approaches, reflect on the role of writing and feedback in learning, and help students build the skills needed to produce clear, purposeful written work across subject areas.

Child Development Associates (CDA) Program

Penn's innovative CDA program consists of 3 courses that build on the knowledge of early childhood practitioners, connecting child development theory and practice, as well as health, safety, nutrition, family/community relations, and ethical practice with children, families and the community. The CDA six competency goals and thirteen functional areas are integrated into course content and discussions.

The Project-Based Learning certificate program is designed for current educators who strive to create rich, meaningful, and rigorous learning experiences through student-centered approaches to teaching and learning. Developed in collaboration with the Science Leadership Academy, the Workshop School, Inquiry Schools, and EL Education, the program leverages the educational expertise of Penn GSE’s faculty and some of the most skilled and experienced student-centered learning practitioners from across the country.

Project-Based Learning for Global Climate Justice

The Project-Based Learning for Global Climate Justice program equips educators with the knowledge and skills they need to design projects that engage students in this important environmental justice work. Learn about PBL for Global Climate Justice and how to engage your students in authentic, action-oriented, and meaningful learning experiences. The time to take action on global climate change is now.

Setting Up a Coaching Program

Setting Up a Coaching Program equips school and district leaders with the frameworks, tools, and supports needed to develop or refine a mentoring and coaching program that is aligned to standards, research, and best practices.  

Teaching and Leading Social-Emotional Learning

The Teaching and Leading Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Certificate program teaches you methods to support healthy and equity-oriented social and emotional learning in your classrooms, schools, and organizations.

Teaching Math Routines for Computational Fluency

Prepare to shift towards the Standards for Mathematical Practices by implementing a research-based number sense routine into your classroom. Number Talk is a high-leverage, low-risk routine focused on developing computational fluency using representations to support student learning and connecting to essential mathematics.

The Penn Learning Network works with organizations, networks, and systems to design and deliver custom professional learning solutions that draw on the unique resources, research, and faculty of the Penn Community. We work with school districts, organizations, and non-profits to offer instructional and leadership coaching, workshops, and fully customized programs that align to organizational goals. Contact ProfessionalLearning@gse.upenn.edu to learn more about our custom programs.

Policies & Refunds

Attendance Policy

In order to successfully complete a given program, you must complete all of the required asynchronous assignments and attend all of the synchronous sessions and meetings. If you have to miss a synchronous session or meeting, you should contact your Program Director in advance in order to make arrangements. At their discretion, the Program Director may require you to attend an additional meeting or complete an additional assignment to make up for an absence.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

If you must withdraw your registration, a full refund will be issued for requests received no later than one week prior to the program's start date.  If a withdraw request is received after the enrollment deadline and prior to the program’s second session you will receive a fee credit or option to defer, valid for one year, for a future Penn Learning Network program. Withdraw requests received after the program’s second session will not be granted a credit, deferment, or refund. Cancellations can not be made after the program’s start date however you may be eligible for a deferment, see the policy below. If Penn Learning Network must cancel the program, a full refund will be issued, or you may request a deferment.

Deferment Policy

This Penn Learning Network Deferment Policy outlines the guidelines and procedures for deferring enrollment in a certificate program. This policy aims to support learners who may encounter unforeseen circumstances or personal challenges that prevent them from continuing with their professional development as planned. By allowing learners to defer their enrollment, we strive to provide flexibility and support for their educational journey while maintaining the integrity and quality of the certificate programs offered.

  • Eligibility for Deferment:

    • Learners enrolled in a Penn Learning Network program are eligible to request a deferment.

    • Deferment requests will be considered for exceptional circumstances, including but not limited to medical reasons, family emergencies, personal challenges, and unforeseen professional commitments.

  • Deferment Request:

    • Learners seeking deferment must email a formal written request to the Penn Learning Network, providing detailed reasoning.

    • The deferment request must be submitted prior to the second session of the program the learner is seeking to defer. Late requests may be considered only under exceptional circumstances and will require additional justification.
