Now more than ever, it is imperative that the stories we tell, read, and write are reflective of the histories and experiences of the many different communities that make up our world — communities which are often missing from bookshelves in schools and libraries.

While migration research tends to focus on migrants and the countries that receive them, Briana Nichols, a joint doctoral candidate in Education, Culture, and Society, and Anthropology, chose to focus her research on the community members who are fighting to stay.

2011 McGraw Prize winner, Mitchel Resnick is the head of the Lifelong Kindergarten research group at the MIT Media Lab. His team is known for the work it has done to innovate media-based learning, such as developing the computer programming language known as Scratch, the world’s largest free coding community designed specifically for kids, which makes coding accessible for children and enables them to create their own stories, games and animations while fostering creativity, systematic reasoning and collaboration.

Penn GSE’s Amalia Daché has studied Afro Cuban life and educational opportunities under Cuba’s dictatorship. She says the world is seeing Afro Cubans’ frustration with the racist and classist society the regime maintains.
