Preparing for Interviews at Penn GSE

Posted by Molly Leger, '19 on March 22, 2019

With hiring season around the corner, students around GSE are donning their best blazers and putting the finishing touches on their updated resumes. Before you walk into that first interview, check out these helpful supports and strategies for Penn students from Penn career services:

1. Meet with a Career Counselor

If you haven’t already been to Penn GSE’s Career Services Office on the second floor of 3700 Walnut, be sure to make your appointment soon. A team of knowledgeable career counselors are available to review your resume, tweak your cover letter, and talk you through all your pre-interview anxieties. While other services on campus will be helpful in providing general advice, the career services at Penn GSE will be able to customize that feedback specific to the landscape of educational careers. You can sign up for an appointment on Handshake.

 2. Attend a weekly workshop

Over the course of the spring semester, Penn GSE’s Career Services Office is offering Wednesday Workshops to facilitate a successful hiring season for its students. Future workshops include topics such as how to interview in a way that communicates your job fit and how to network authentically. All Wednesday workshops are listed here.

 3. Do a recorded self-review

Penn offers its students the opportunity to record, review, and reflect on practice interviews with Interview Stream, a leading practice interview system. You can see and hear yourself respond to pre-recorded interview questions. Not satisfied with your self-review? You can forward your recorded practice interview to advisors and mentors so they can offer their insight. Both current students and alums can access Interview Stream here.

4. Practice with mock interviews:

Mock interviews can be scheduled to get real-time feedback on your interviewing strengths and room for growth. You can conduct these with or without recording. To make an appointment, Penn students should call (215) 898-4381.

 5. Check out these online interview resources

Penn Career Services recommends checking out these resources in advance of your interview:

-   Glassdoor allows you to read about the experiences of past interviewees at the same company you’re interested in

-     Vault Career Insider is an online career library that all Penn students have access to. This is a valuable tool for interviewing and career advice specific to the companies you’re interested in.

-  Interview-related posts on Penn & Beyond are targeted blog posts written by Penn career counselors to help Penn students in the hiring season.
